11+ Learning

What is the 11+?

The 11+ is an entrance examination used in some parts of England and Northern Ireland to determine admission to certain secondary schools, particularly grammar schools and some selective independent schools.

Who takes the 11+?

Children usually sit the exam in Year 6 (age 10–11), before starting secondary school in Year 7.

What does it test?

The exact format varies by area and school, but commonly includes:

  • English (reading comprehension, vocabulary, writing)
  • Mathematics
  • Verbal reasoning (solving word-based logic problems)
  • Non-verbal reasoning (patterns, shapes, and spatial reasoning)

Kent Test

The Kent Test is used by Kent County Council grammar schools to help decide whether a child may be well suited to a grammar school education.

This is only used for admission to Kent grammar schools.

A grammar school assessment does not guarantee your child a place, as admissions decisions also depend on each school’s entry criteria and the number of places available.

If you are applying for a school in Medway or Bexley, those areas have their own separate tests: the Medway Test and the Bexley selection test.

Registration for the Kent Test opened on 1 June and closes on 1 July 2026.

For more information:  Medway Council

Medway Test

Children who would like to be considered for a Medway grammar school will need to sit the Medway Test.

Chatham Grammar is the exception to this is the admissions policy.

(Children assessed through the Medway Test or Kent Test)

The Medway Test can be taken by children whether they live in Medway or not.

If you live in Medway but are considering grammar schools in another area, your child will need to sit the relevant test for the schools in the other area.

Registration for the Medway Test opens on Monday 18 May and closes on Friday 12 June 2026.
